The Devil Wears Prada 2 held its world premiere this week, and early reactions have since begun rolling in from critics who attended the screening. Notably, the responses share a striking consensus about the long-awaited sequel, with one particular element consistently drawing repeated praise across reviews.
What are the early reactions to The Devil Wears Prada 2?
The Devil Wears Prada 2 premiered last night, and first reactions have since praised the sequel as a worthy follow-up. Notably, Variety’s Jazz Tangcay called the film “phenomenal” and described the script by Aline Brosh McKenna as sharp and witty. Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter’s Alex Weprin labelled the movie “a biting media parody wrapped up in high fashion.”
David Frankel directs the sequel, which sees Andy (Anne Hathaway) return to Runway as Miranda (Meryl Streep) attempts to keep the magazine afloat. Emily Blunt reprises her role as Emily, now the head of a luxury brand holding the keys to Runway’s survival. Stanley Tucci, Tracie Thoms, and Tibor Feldman also return.
Critic Matt Neglia praised the cast on X, writing that Hathaway, Streep, Blunt, and Tucci “slip back into their roles as if no time has passed, while finding new shades in their characters that thread the fine line between nostalgia and the present day.” Neglia highlighted the film’s commentary on modern media as a key strength.
The Movie Podcast’s Daniel Baptista called the sequel “a FUN and FIERCE sequel that makes a statement,” adding that Hathaway and Streep “SERVE in every single frame.” Yahoo Entertainment’s Brett described the film as “quite charming and fun, despite that awful trailer” and predicted it would become “a massive hit.”
Rendy Jones echoed the praise for the film’s media themes, writing that the sequel said “support your publications and the journalists who are the real arbiters of taste” while still delivering a great movie. Critic Tomris Laffly offered a more muted response, noting parts of the film felt “like a documentary on the painful state of journalism.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 releases in cinemas on 1 May.
