James Gunn paid tribute to legendary comic book writer Gerry Conway following news of his death. The DC Studios co-CEO took to social media to honour the creator behind some of the medium’s most iconic characters and storylines.
James Gunn remembers Gerry Conway
James Gunn paid tribute to comic book writer Gerry Conway, who passed away on April 27, 2026, at age 73. Conway co-created The Punisher, Firestorm, Jason Todd, Killer Croc, and Power Girl during his career at Marvel and DC.
Gunn shared his thoughts on Threads following the announcement of Conway’s death. “Rest in Peace, Gerry Conway. A spectacular comics writer who did wonderful work for both Marvel and DC,” Gunn wrote.
The DC Studios co-CEO highlighted several of Conway’s signature contributions to the medium. Gunn called him the “Co creator of Firestorm, Punisher & Man-Bat, writer of The Night Gwen Stacy Died, the incredible Lazarus Pit stories, & the Spider-Man clone saga (an extremely influential run for me personally as a kid).”
Gunn closed his post by acknowledging Conway’s broader impact on the industry. “His influence affects us all who work in the space. All my love goes out to his friends and family,” Gunn added.
Conway began writing comics at 16 and took over The Amazing Spider-Man at age 19. He scripted The Night Gwen Stacy Died in The Amazing Spider-Man #121 and co-created the Punisher in issue #129 alongside John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru. He also briefly served as Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief in early 1976.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige released a statement honoring the writer’s legacy. “Gerry Conway brought real stakes to his writing, able to weave together sensational super heroics with the human and relatable, and in doing so created some of the most memorable stories and characters of all time,” Feige said.
Beyond comics, Conway wrote for television series including Law & Order, Matlock, and Batman: The Animated Series. His wife, Laura Conway, survives him.
