DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has quietly hit the brakes on one of the franchise’s most anticipated projects. The update on The Authority movie arrived not through a press release, but through a casual Threads exchange with fans on Monday. Three years after the film landed on the original DCU slate, its future now sits firmly on the shelf. And now, fans are reacting to the update on social media.
Fans are saying this about DC shelving The Authority movie
James Gunn recently addressed speculation about his involvement in The Authority movie and the project’s status. “I would have never had time to [write and direct The Authority] and although I know this is a popular theory online I never had an intention of writing or directing The Authority. The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon,” Gunn wrote on Threads.
Fans on X (formerly Twitter) reacted to the development with a mixture of disappointment and acceptance. One user wrote, “People wanna see movie on Wonder Woman, Nightwing, Justice League Dark,etc…..I don’t wanna see The Authority movie before we get DCU Batman.”
Other users questioned whether the property warranted a film adaptation in the first place. A fan posted, “The Authority were never popular to begin with and similar concepts have already been done before. So I’m not really surprised at all.”
Further, some fans urged DC Studios to focus on bigger characters. “Shelve all the passion projects and deep cuts and get the characters that matter done,” wrote one user on the platform.
Other fans expressed cautious optimism about the shift in priorities. One user posted, “Though it’s a little disappointing for me but maybe this is for the better. The initial plan may have been changed now. That can be the reason why #jamesgunn isn’t thinking #theauthority as a priority right now.”
While The Authority has been shelved, Gunn confirmed that Booster Gold and Paradise Lost remain in development.
