Groundbreaking. The post The Devil Wears Prada 2 Has Already Passed a Major Box Office Milestone appeared first on ComingSoon.net - Movie Trailers, TV & Streaming News, and More.

Strutting down the runway with ease, The Devil Wears Prada 2 has achieved a crucial box office goal merely a week after its theatrical debut. The comedy sequel to the iconic 2006 film stunned with its $76 million domestic opening weekend and $233 million global opener. Disney’s 20th Century Studios poured nearly $100 million into the film, far larger than the original’s $40 million, and that investment is already paying off. Audiences have flocked to The Devil Wears Prada 2 for many reasons, particularly for the return of Meryl Streep to the silver screen and her reunion with Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci in their nostalgic roles. And now the movie has received more good news that will help the sequel become one of the biggest box office successes in 2026.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 breaks ground as a nostalgic comedy sequel
As of May 8, The Devil Wears Prada 2 has earned a worldwide total of $253.2 million, according to Box Office Mojo, marking the comedy as being profitable.
Variety reported that the production budget for this sequel was “roughly $100 million, not including the worldwide marketing budget.” The general rule for movies, and especially blockbusters like this, is that they need to gross 2.5 times its budget at the box office to break even after accounting for marketing, print and advertising, and other costs. That means The Devil Wears Prada 2 needed to pass the lofty $250 million mark to be a box office success, a feat it has already accomplished in seven days as its second weekend approaches. Everything that the film earns from this point onward will be profit for 20th Century Studios.
On that front, box office predictions for the film’s second week remain high. BoxOfficeTheory’s May 6 report believes that it will earn another $40.8 million domestically across over 4,000 theaters, a figure that falls well within range of BoxOfficePro’s projected $38 million to $43 million. Despite facing off against Michael and the debut of Mortal Kombat 2, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is still expected to draw 17% of the showtime market share, against MK2’s 18% and Michael’s 14%. On the global scale, Deadline predicts that the comedy will earn another $65 million to $75 million internationally, meaning that it would gather another $100 million by May 10.
Much of the sequel’s global awareness has come from a mass marketing campaign that saw the movie’s stars go on a press tour around the world, along with a Giant Red Heel Tour that planted the original film’s iconic giant red heels at various landmarks across the United States. The film has numerous campaign partners, in addition to the inherent Prada push, with global brands like L’Oréal Paris, Dior, Diet Coke, Grey Goose, and many more. It also features Lady Gaga in a minor cameo and her movie tie-in single “Runway” with fellow pop star Doechii that has received 12.8 million views on YouTube so far.
More importantly, The Devil Wears Prada 2 has positioned itself as the premiere movie event for women, in similar fashion to 2023’s Barbie. Theaters have chimed in on the fun by crafting special party experiences, cocktails, popcorn buckets, and other merch specifically for the movie. Its success shows that there is still an audience for comedies, a genre that has largely been displaced by animated sequels, superhero flicks, and horror films.
The sequel has been able to deliver as a substantive follow-up by honing in on legacy print magazines having to contend with social media and lower subscriber numbers. On Rotten Tomatoes, it enjoys a high “Certified Fresh” 78% critics rating and an even higher 86% audience rating.
