Skip Bayless made his surprise return to ESPN this week, appearing on a one-time return to First Take, the show he and Stephen A. Smith turned into a staple of American sports debate programs. The return was a fun one, filled with nostalgia, but is better served as a one-off instance than anything permanent.
Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith have history, but a one-time reunion is best
After 10 years away from the program, Bayless made his return to First Take for the first time since departing ESPN in 2016 for FS1. Bayless and Smith are no strangers to each other, having worked together on the sports debate program First Take since 2012, when Smith joined the program.
Since 2012, the pair have become icons in the world of sports talk programming, known for their eccentric personalities and extremely hot takes when it comes to certain things, as well as their back-and-forth banter during their time together.
Today’s show featured more or less the same old stuff. Bayless and Smith settled right back into the flow of things, going back-and-forth about a variety of things, while Bayless once again brought up Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and his place in NBA history.
Bayless and Smith’s reunion was one that had fans happy on social media, as the pair have earned somewhat of a nostalgic feel due to the way some fans view sports programming now versus how it was even just 10 years ago. Still, although Bayless’ return was fun to watch, it’s best that ESPN kept it as a one-time moment, and not something that kept popping up.
After Bayless left ESPN in 2016, he went on to FS1 to host another popular sports talk show, Undisputed, with Shannon Sharpe. Bayless would eventually leave FS1 in 2024, and now hosts his own show where he talks hot takes in the sports world. As for Smith, he’s become essentially the face of ESPN, and a sports icon in his own right since Bayless’ departure, with First Take remaining the top sports debate program on television.
With both men now firmly at different positions in their career, it made sense for a brief reunion. It was fun to see Bayless and Smith argue about LeBron, the Dallas Cowboys, and more for a few hours and think back to how they used to do it back in the day. Any more than that, though, and it may feel a bit less meaningful, and would only serve to undercut just how far both have come since their days yelling at one another in 2016.
