Fans eagerly anticipating the next instalment in the Paranormal Activity franchise may need to temper their expectations. Paranormal Activity: Threshold was intended to be the second significant video game adaptation of the horror series, but a recent update has introduced some unexpected changes.
What is the update on the Paranormal Activity video game?
Brian Clarke, aka DarkStone Digital, the solo developer behind The Mortuary Assistant and Paranormal Activity: Threshold, announced that the game has been cancelled. It was being developed by DarkStone Digital and DreadXP.
Clarke announced the news in a social media post addressing fans.
“Sadly, Paramount did not agree to extend development,” said Clarke. “This left me with two choices: Rush through development and release a sub-par product I would not be proud of or request we go our separate ways. I chose the latter.”
“Proudly, DreadXP stood by me every step of the way and we parted ways with Paramount amicably. It was an honor to even be considered to work on an IP I love so much. So this chapter ends for me but I’m not going anywhere. I may need a small vacation, but am excited and eager to return to my corner of horror that you all have so generously allowed me to occupy.”
It’s an unfortunate turn of events, as ComingSoon’s preview of Paranormal Activity: Threshold at PAX East 2026 promised an impressive take on the horror franchise. The game followed players taking on the role of a homicide detective investigating the mysterious circumstances of the death of a couple.
The Paranormal Activity franchise includes seven movies, with an eighth movie currently in production. The director of the currently untitled film has revealed that it will toy with the evolution of camera technology in the sequel.
Paranormal Activity: Threshold would have been released sometime in 2026 on PC and consoles. Paranormal Activity 8 will be released on May 21, 2027.
