As The Sheep Detectives movie finally arrives in theaters today, there are a few things that audiences might want to know before seeing Hugh Jackman‘s latest mystery comedy movie on the big screen.
The Sheep Detectives was directed by Kyle Balda, with Craig Mazin writing the screenplay based on Leonie Swann’s 2005 novel Three Bags Full. The Deadpool & Wolverine star leads the live-action cast that consists of Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, Emma Thompson, Tosin Cole, Mandeep Dhillon, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, and Conleth Hill. They are joined by a star-studded voice cast, featuring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein, and Rhys Darby.
“In this witty, new breed of mystery, George is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can’t possibly understand,” reads the synopsis. “But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers.”
What should you know before watching Hugh Jackman’s new movie?
Before going into the theaters, The Sheep Detectives audiences should be aware that Jackman really doesn’t have a lot of screentime in the new movie. Even though he was the star in all of the film’s promotional materials, his character will mysteriously die early on in the film, which serves as the central topic of the story. His character’s death isn’t exactly a secret because it was already revealed in previous trailers.
Even though fans expecting to see 90 minutes of Jackman will be disappointed, many critics guarantee that they can still very much enjoy watching the new whodunnit movie due to its charm and heartfelt humor. Catalina Combs of Taji Magazine described it as “a well-written who-done-it for the entire family. Hugh Jackman as the lead instantly projects calm, quiet worthiness.” Meanwhile, Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com calls the X-Men star’s performance “sublime as the shepherd.”
It’s also worth noting that The Sheep Detectives will not only be a fun and whimsical PG-13 romp, but is also a film that tackles themes of death, grief, and trauma. Chris Tilly of Dexerto calls it “a movie with a surprising amount of depth, and one that will doubtless trigger some tears between the many laughs.” At the moment, the movie has a Certified Fresh score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it Jackman’s highest-rated movie to date.
