A vital member from 1999’s The Blair Witch Project has explained why they are not in the upcoming reboot. The new movie will see several cast members coming back from the original horror blockbuster, except for Heather Donahue.
Why isn’t Heather Donahue in the new The Blair Witch Project movie?
Heather Donahue, who changed her name to Rei Hance several years ago, won’t be in The Blair Witch Project reboot film. She played Heather in the original installment but chose not to be a part of the franchise moving forward, including the reboot.
The former actress recently provided a much-needed clarity for why she’s not involved in The Blair Witch Project reboot, reports Bloody Disgusting. “There seems to be some willful confusion about my involvement with the reboot. I want to clarify that I am not participating.”
She mentioned that she had opportunities to return to future Blair Witch projects, but was concerned due to various factors. “I was offered an agreement that, for me personally, raised difficult long-term questions about rights, future technological use of identity and voice, the ability to speak freely, and compensation.”
She concluded, saying, “Ultimately, it just wasn’t something I felt comfortable signing. I genuinely wish everyone involved well. But preserving my autonomy mattered more to me.”

While Rei (formerly Heather) isn’t returning, other cast members, including Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, will be back for the reboot. However, they will serve as the executive producers alongside the original filmmakers, Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale.
The original Blair Witch Project movie was a breakout hit when it first came out in theaters. Made on a small budget of just $600,000, it made $248 million worldwide, according to The Numbers.
The Blair Witch Project reboot has Dylan Clark as the director. Plus, it has already received a release window for 2027.
