The upcoming Monopoly movie currently has two different scripts in development. It was previously announced that Lionsgate, Hasbro, and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap are developing a Monopoly movie.
What is the update on the Monopoly movie?
In a new update (via Deadline), it has been revealed that two different scripts are being written for the movie: one by Neil Widener & Gavin James, and the other by Rebecca Angelo & Lauren Schuker Blum. The studios have been presented with two different outlines and will likely commission a single script.
Lionsgate has been developing a Monopoly movie for over a decade. The studio previously had Andrew Niccol attached to write a script, while another iteration would have featured Kevin Hart with Tim Story directing. Following a fresh announcement last year, Game Night’s John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were brought in to pen the script, but that version was ultimately scrapped.
Neil Widener & Gavin James wrote last year’s megahit, A Minecraft Movie, which grossed over $900 million at the box office. Following that, the duo is attached to the Minecraft sequel and Jak & Daxter, an adaptation of the PlayStation video game. Neil Widener & Gavin James wrote 2023’s Dumb Money and are also writing the upcoming Murder She Wrote, starring Jamie Lee Curtis.

The Monopoly movie is to be produced by Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara, joined by Robbie through her production company. The Monopoly board game franchise has sold almost half a billion copies worldwide. The franchise will see an unusual crossover with Star Wars in an upcoming video game.
Separately, Studio Lambert is also developing a Monopoly TV show for Netflix. The upcoming show will be an unscripted series, but no other details have been revealed. It remains to be seen which Monopoly project, whether it’s the film or the show, comes out first.
