Avengers: Endgame is set to return to theaters with brand new footage. Here’s how the new scenes could connect to the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday.
Endgame is set to rerelease in theaters in September, where it will do so under the name Avengers: Endgame Encore. The new release will not only let fans watch the hit movie, but also feature a new custom introduction, a new end tag, and new footage that will reportedly help connect to Doomsday.
“It’s an opportunity to create a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday in a very unique way,” director Joe Russo said, calling the new release a “critical companion story” to Doomsday. With that in mind, here’s some ways in which the upcoming rerelease could lead us to the next Avengers movie.
How Avengers: Endgame’s new footage could connect to Doctor Doom
The first, and most potentially obvious option, could be a post-credits scene showing off Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom. So far, we’ve not seen what he looks like in the movie outside of one very brief scene in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. We’ve also not yet seen Downey himself in the costume, with Marvel Studios playing everything extremely coy when it comes to that. While it might sound odd to reveal Doom’s look in Endgame, it wouldn’t be too shocking.
Prior to being the big bad of the MCU, Thanos had been teased across several Marvel movies in very small snippets. Using Endgame’s rerelease as a chance to do the same to Doom would be smart in that regard. Tons of people will be seeing the rerelease, and buzz around Doom’s appearance would help get even more people excited for the movie. There’s some other less likely options too, though, including one that involves Chris Evans.
We know that Steve Rogers/Captain America is set to return in this movie, and will be played by Evans. What we don’t really know, though, is how that’s going to happen. The last time we saw Rogers, he was an old man who had elected to stay in the past to live out a life with Peggy Carter. The only time we’ve seen him in Doomsday is a super small snippet of him holding what looks to be his child. Could Endgame’s new footage show us how Rogers makes it out of the past and back into the fold of heroes? This might be something Marvel is keeping for the movie, but would work as a major surprise and big moment to see Evans again.
Besides Downey and Evans’ return, Marvel Studios could elect to go the route of the multiverse with the new footage. We know that Doomsday will feature some sort of connection to the many universes in the MCU. Endgame did as well, although way before things like the TVA had been established in Disney+’s Loki. Instead, Endgame featured the use of The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), who explained to Bruce Banner essentially how the multiverse worked. The rerelease could show us even more of that, and potentially bring in the TVA to explain how we’ll be getting to where we’re at when Doomsday premieres on December 18, 2026.
