What do we know about A24’s Undertone movie?

Undertone was written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Ian Tuason in his feature directorial debut. In the film, The Handmaid’s Tale vet Nina Kiri is the only cast member shown on-screen. The movie features the voices of Kris Holden-Ried (The Umbrella Academy) as Justin, Michèle Duquet (The Virgin Suicides) as Mama, Keana Lyn Bastidas (The Hardy Boys) as Jessa, Jeff Yung (The Shrouds) as Mike, and more. Following its debut, it received an approval rating of 74% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 188 reviews.

“The host of a popular paranormal podcast is sent hidden messages within anonymous recordings, unleashing a demonic presence that is impossible to escape,” reads the official synopsis.

The movie was executive-produced by Steven Schneider and Roy Lee for Spooky Pictures, Chad Archibald for Black Fawn Films, Brit MacRae and Daril Fannin for Kino Studios, and DimensionGate. It was produced by Dan Slater for Slaterverse Pictures and Cody Calahan for Black Fawn Films. The creative team also included director of photography Graham Beasley, editor Sonny Atkins, and composer Shanika Lewis-Waddell. A24 originally acquired the worldwide rights to the movie through a competitive bidding war after it first screened at the 2025 Fantasia Film Festival. The deal reportedly cost the studio around mid-7 figures.
