Pixar has shared a new update on its upcoming Finding Nemo short film, in which Ellen DeGeneres will reprise her role as Dory. The short film will mark Dory’s third appearance in the franchise since Finding Dory.
What is the update on the new Finding Nemo short film?
Pixar has revealed a work-in-progress look at the new Finding Nemo short film, including unveiling its title. The image features concept art from Loving Dory, with the titular fish swimming beside purple coral formations. The announcement came at the Annecy International Film Festival.
The post reads, “Just keep swimming… A first look at concept art of the all-new short ‘Loving Dory’ set in the world of ‘Finding Nemo,’ directed by Lou Hamou-Lhadj is coming soon!”
The upcoming animated short will see Dory form a dalliance with a plastic bag. Hamou-Lhadj read portions of the screenplay at Annecy, while also giving the audience a behind-the-scenes look at the project (via Deadline). Reportedly, the film will see Dory mistaking a plastic bag, which has lost its contents, and starts to look like a sea creature near her and Nemo’s coral reef home.
“It’s a new chapter in Dory’s story, because she allows us to have fun,” said Hamou-Lhadj at Annecy. The short film will premiere in theaters on a date yet to be announced.
This isn’t the first short film set in the world of Finding Nemo. Following the release of the original film, Pixar has released two documentaries attached to the film and its sequel’s home release. The first film was directed by Andrew Stanton and released in 2003 to critical acclaim. The film grossed over $940.3 million at the box office and won the Best Animated Feature award at the Academy Awards.
Thirteen years later, a sequel, titled Finding Dory, was released in 2016 and received similar praise. Once again directed by Andrew Stanton, the film grossed over $1 billion at the box office.
