Wes Anderson teases new movie with a Western theme and Bill Murray. The American filmmaker wants to pay homage to his Texas origins in a new cowboy project.
Wes Anderson and Bill Murray hint at a cowboy collaboration
At the Cinema Paradiso in Paris, Anderson presented his 2014 hit The Grand Budapest Hotel. During this presentation, Bill Murray walked on stage and talked about a new project he would like to collaborate with Anderson on.
He recalled his previous work with Anderson and the two movies he missed out on, adding that he wanted their next project together to be a cowboy movie. He reasoned, “Anderson’s from Texas, and I feel he owes the world a cowboy movie,” and went on to imitate a cowboy’s walk, after claiming, “That’s why I’ve started walking like this.”
Upon this, The French Dispatch’s creator confirmed that he had been playing around with the idea. He said, “We will do a Western, you know. I think. For many years, we’ve talked about doing a Western. Owen and Luke Wilson, I think, will be a part of that… They’re from Texas, too, and I think it’s our destiny.”
Murray also spoke about what it was like working with the director. The actor joked that Anderson wouldn’t crack a smile on set unless there was dessert involved.

He has been part of Anderson’s universe for a long time. He has played characters in Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch, and recently, in The Phoenician Scheme.
He was also part of Isle of Dogs, which was recently added to HBO Max. The actor was also set to appear in Asteroid City but was replaced by Steve Carell after contracting COVID-19 during filming.
Anderson is currently working on an untitled feature film co-written by him, Roman Coppola, and Richard Ayoade. This new movie is expected to begin production in Europe in late 2026.
