Earlier this month, it was announced that Obsession director Curry Barker has been tapped to direct the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie from A24. We’ve recently gotten a new update on the film, one that suggests that A24 has found the right man to lead the way for the future of the franchise’s movie hopes.
What is the latest Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie update?
Speaking to Total Film in a recent interview, Barker — who is tapped to write and direct the upcoming film — revealed that the film will likely focus more on Leatherface’s infamous family in the movies, which Barker says intrigues him a ton.
“I think of it as respecting the source material,” Barker said. “I absolutely love the original film, but I want to do something that’s different. I’m not gonna stray away too far from what we know, but just making it stronger…Really, I want to lean into the uncomfortability of the family. I want to lean into the rawness of what’s going on there. There’s some really messed up stuff happening at that farm. I genuinely feel there’s so much potential for that concept that has not been realized.”
Barker’s comments suggest that we’ll be seeing much more of the Leatherface’s family, who are diabolical in their own right. He also noted that the 2003 remake of the franchise, which starred Jessica Biel, is his favorite, and with that information, his reasoning becomes a lot more understandable.
Why the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre update is good news
While many might want the next Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie to follow and focus on Leatherface, I think it’s pretty smart to veer away from that. For one, the character is so well known and has been covered in so many movies, that we know pretty much all there is to know about him. While the Hewitt family has been featured in a handful of projects, most noticeably in the second and third entries of the franchise, we’ve never really gotten a movie that explores deeper into what makes them who they are.
As iconic of a slasher villain as Leatherface is, his motives are fairly simple, and largely driven by his family more often than not. Unlike a character like Michael Myers, Leatherface also doesn’t stalk or appear out of nowhere too often, leading to a harder ability to showcase him in those lights. With the movie focusing more on his family, this will still allow Leatherface to appear, but give the movie the chance to showcase some scary stuff in new and unpredictable ways.
