Lanterns co-creator Chris Mundy has explained why the forthcoming DCU show will be for both longtime and brand-new Green Lantern fans.
DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television’s Lanterns premieres on HBO and HBO Max this coming summer. Created by Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, the show will see Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre play Green Lantern characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
What did Chris Mundy say about Lanterns?
Speaking with ComicBook, Mundy was asked if creating a DCU show that was a bit more grounded than other superhero projects and perhaps more in line with some of HBO’s other series was a challenging prospect.
“It was less challenging than it was just exciting. Our take was that we have this incredibly rich mythology within the Green Lantern canon, and we have this incredibly rich history of Sunday night HBO shows — everything from The Sopranos to Game of Thrones, and in between,” he answered.
Mundy then went on to explain how this approach will allow the show to cater to both Green Lantern fans who grew up reading DC Comics and those who might be new to the subject matter.
“The fun of it was to try to create a real, layered drama that dealt with who these characters are as human beings while still staying true to the spirit of what makes the comics so special,” he commented. “We wanted it to be accessible for anyone who doesn’t know the canon, but, at the same time, satisfying for people who know the lore in minute detail. So, yes, it was challenging, but only in the way that the most fun things are.”
In addition to Chandler and Pierre, the cast of Lanterns includes Kelly Macdonald as Kerry, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, and more.
Lanterns premieres on August 16, 2026.
