Netflix has announced the cancellation of one of its most popular shows.
The streamer revealed that The Night Agent will end with its upcoming fourth season being its final one. The surprising news comes just a couple of months after the show was renewed by Netflix.
What Netflix show has been canceled after four seasons?
The Night Agent debuted on Netflix in 2023, instantly rising to the streamer’s top 10 charts. The Night Agent has received an average approval rating of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. Netflix revealed that the show’s first season was its most-watched show in the first half of 2023, although subsequent seasons have maintained a passionate and large viewership.
The series is led by Gabriel Basso, who portrays FBI agent Sutherland, uncovering a conspiracy against the United States. The show is based on the eponymous 2019 novel by Matthew Quirk, though the series has long surpassed the plot of its source material.
Following news of the cancellation, series creator Shawn Ryan released a statement (via Deadline) reflecting on the four-season journey of Sutherland and its conclusion.
“Ever since the initial success of ‘The Night Agent,’ I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey,” said Ryan. “I’m so grateful to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television for partnering with me on The Night Agent and for giving us the space to deliver a definitive final season to our worldwide legion of fans. We are hard at work to complete our story and to make our final season one our fans will never forget.”
The final season of the Netflix show will take Sutherland further west on a new adventure, set this time in Los Angeles. As for what that entails, Ryan said that the season will be set in “a world that is present in Los Angeles, it’s not present in New York for the most part; there’s something in the Los Angeles region that exists at a much bigger level than New York.” Unlike previous seasons, the final season will not feature any excursions to other countries.
The Night Agent season 4 is currently in production and will likely stream on Netflix in 2027. As for fans who are craving political thrillers following the conclusion of The Night Agent, F1 (2025) star Damson Idris will soon be leading The Lords’ Day, which may scratch the same itch.
