Avengers: Doomsday arrives in December 2026, and, naturally, there’ve been plenty of leaks, rumors, and plot detail reports coming out online. While some fans worry that these may ruin the movie, co-director Joe Russo isn’t worried about details coming out as he thinks spoilers can be “over-policed.”
What did Avengers: Doomsday director Joe Russo say about spoiler culture?
In an interview with Metro, Avengers: Doomsday co-director Joe Russo discussed his thoughts about spoiler culture and how filmmakers go to great lengths to preserve a film’s secrets.
“On one hand, audiences want to be surprised, and that’s part of what makes the theatrical experience exciting,” said Joe Russo. “On the other hand, it can become a little over-policed, where people are anxious about engaging with anything.”
“We design these films to unfold in a certain way, and we want audiences to feel those moments as intended. But at the same time, you can’t control everything. You have to focus on making something that holds up beyond the initial surprise.”
It may sound like the director is okay with spoilers making the rounds ahead of a film’s release. Still, the Russo brothers’ production company AGBO, which is co-producing Marvel’s upcoming Avengers sequels, is taking every step it can to safeguard the film’s secrets.
“There’s some serious lockdown at our company. And it’s a very limited group that are across the different things that Anthony and Joe are aware of,” added Angela Russo-Otstot, Chief Creative Officer at AGBO. “We may think we know things and we’re wrong!”
The Russo brothers helmed Marvel’s biggest hits, including massive spoilers that changed the MCU status quo, from Captain America: The Winter Soldier to Avengers: Endgame. The Russos have shaped and guarded some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest twists.
Avengers: Doomsday will reunite many old and new Avengers, alongside legacy Marvel heroes like the X-Men, joining the fray. While Marvel had earlier revealed its massive cast ahead of production, recent developments have revealed surprising additions to the ensemble. Even then, it seems many MCU actors have yet to be publicly added to the cast, though some of these announcements have seemingly started to slip through the cracks.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
