Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is making a new original sci-fi movie.

Levy is best known for directing the MCU blockbuster movie Deadpool & Wolverine, which was released in 2022. He’s currently working on Star Wars: Starfighter with Ryan Gosling. That movie is currently set to be released in 2027.

What is Shawn Levy’s new sci-fi movie?

Per The Hollywood Reporter, it’s now been announced that Levy will direct Somewhere Out There. The film is described as being an “emotional sci-fi” flick that is comparable to 2016’s Arrival and 2022’s The Adam Project. Levy produced Arrival, which was directed by Denis Villeneuve, while he helmed The Adam Project.

“The story concerns a grieving father who, after losing his wife, sends a message out into the stars…and something out there starts to talk back,” a description of the plot reads.

No casting has yet been announced; however, The Hollywood Reporter’s article notes that “several prominent actors are already circling the role of the father.”

The movie will be released through Netflix following a “competitive bidding war,” though it’s unclear what other studios were interested in acquiring Levy’s new movie. The script comes from Max Taxe, while Becca Edelman will oversee the project for 21 Laps.

A release date for Somewhere Out There has not yet been announced by Netflix.

After making a few movies in the late 1990s, Levy’s Hollywood career really kicked off in 2002 when he made Big Fat Liar, followed by Just Married in 2023. After that, he went on to direct a number of family movies like 2003’s Cheaper by the Dozen, 2006’s The Pink Panther, 2006’s Night at the Museum, 2009’s Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, and 2014’s Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. Levy has also directed 2010’s Date Night, 2011’s Real Steel, 2013’s The Internship, 2014’s This Is Where I Leave You, and 2021’s Free Guy.
