A report on Netflix was recently released, sharing insights into the trends related to the canceled shows on the streaming platform. This comes after Netflix announced that The Night Agent, featuring Gabriel Basso, Titus Welliver, Trevante Rhodes, and more, will end with its upcoming Season 4.
Why Netflix cancels 1 in 5 shows explained
According to a new report, the streaming platform has canceled one in five shows since 2016, but that number has doubled in 2025.
As per What’s On Netflix, an analysis was conducted of the shows released as scripted series in the US and global markets. Based on the data collected, Netflix released 23 scripted shows in 2025. Of these, 9 shows were renewed, and 8 were limited series.
However, 6 shows were canceled. Thus, the cancellation rate was at 26 percent. The outlet further noted that the cancellations were made to series that either had a single season or were renewed.
The report also revealed that Netflix has made these major cancellation decisions for one reason: audience retention. It conveyed that the streaming giant is known to release series around March, June, September, and December. However, it has decided to axe many shows released during this time as it has not received the response it was anticipating from the viewers.
On the other hand, this cancellation trend is said to be not just taking on new Netflix shows. Series like The Vince Staples Show, FUBAR, and The Recruit were taken off the air their second seasons. This was due to their overall viewership and also a reduction in audience since the debut season.
Meanwhile, according to Variety, recently, after the cancellation of The Night Agent, creator Shawn Ryan said, “Ever since the initial success of ‘The Night Agent,’ I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey. I’m so grateful to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television for partnering with me on The Night Agent and for giving us the space to deliver a definitive final season to our worldwide legion of fans.”
