Ahead of the long-awaited release of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, a new update about Greta Gerwig‘s upcoming Netflix adaptation has been revealed, teasing one of the records that it could potentially break.

Recently, Netflix confirmed that Gerwig’s highly anticipated Narnia movie will not only debut in IMAX theaters, but will also receive a wide theatrical release globally on February 12, 2027. This rare move from the streamer shows how confident the company is in the success of the acclaimed filmmaker’s adaptation.

What Netflix record might Greta Gerwig’s Narnia movie break?

Besides granting Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew a theatrical release, it seems like Netflix has doubled down on the project. According to Matthew Belloni, on his recent podcast with Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw, he claimed that Gerwig’s new Narnia movie might now be the streamer’s most expensive film ever, potentially breaking the current record set by Chris Pratt’s sci-fi movie The Electric State with Joe and Anthony Russo.

“I’ve heard it’s going to be the most expensive movie Netflix has ever made, if not the most, with apologies to the Russo brothers here, but it’s going to be among the most expensive movies that Netflix has ever made,” Belloni shared.

The insider didn’t share a specific number for Narnia’s potential total budget, but it would definitely be more than what Netflix had spent for its current most expensive film, The Electric State, which was around $320 million. This is followed by Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman at $225M, while Dwayne Johnson’s Red Notice and Ryan Gosling’s The Gray Man both cost around $200 million to make.

Should this new update be proven, the new Narnia adaptation would also become the most expensive movie that Gerwig has ever directed. Barbie cost around $145 million. Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’s star-studded ensemble cast includes Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, Ciarán Hinds, Denise Gough, Susan Wokoma, and more. It is based on C.S. Lewis’ 1955 novel of the same name. After its theatrical debut, it will then start streaming on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
