The upcoming comedy film Scary Movie 6 started off slow in box office predictions, but that has changed dramatically in a couple of weeks. Earlier in May, experts tracking the much-anticipated reboot of the Scary Movie franchise would only bring in as much as Masters of the Universe in its domestic opener. But with the Wayans brothers back at the helm of the movie, interest in the sixth installment after more than a decade-long hiatus has reportedly grown at an astounding rate since then. The reboot will bring back many members of the original cast, including Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall (though it will be missing one), making Scary Movie 6 as much a reunion as it is a nostalgic blast from the past. The parody movie is scheduled to release on June 5, 2026, in the United States.
Scary Movie 6 has pulled ahead of Masters of the Universe in box office predictions
A new box office prediction for Scary Movie 6 has the reboot earning $43 million to $53 million in its domestic opening weekend from June 5 to June 7, according to a May 22 long-range forecast from BoxOffice Pro.
When tracking first started for the film on May 8, analytics site BoxOfficeTheory projected that its domestic opener would be much lower at around $25 million to $35 million. This means the movie’s box office projections have almost doubled in just two weeks. While the latest May 22 report from BoxOfficeTheory isn’t as bullish as BoxOffice Pro’s, it has still increased the prediction for Scary Movie 6 to $41 million, in the range of $35 million to $52 million, for its domestic start.
An earlier report from the site warned readers that forecasts for the movie were “volatile,” though it believed the return of its original cast and the surge in the horror genre overall would make the reboot appealing to casual moviegoers. Scary Movie 6 has a wealth of material to parody too, be it Sinners, Weapons, A Quiet Place, Get Out, Michael, and much more.
This higher range from $43M to $53M puts Scary Movie 6 on par with the domestic openers for the earlier, more popular movies in the franchise. 2000’s Scary Movie made $42 million in its domestic start to a $278 million worldwide haul, while 2003’s Scary Movie 3 earned an domestic opener of $49.7 million toward a total of $220 million overall. Better yet, it’s more than three times the $14.1 million domestic opener for 2013’s Scary Movie 5, which was technically a box office success but was only able to rake in $78 million. Its low worldwide total was in partly the reason the Scary Movie franchise has stalled since then.
It also bodes well for Scary Movie 6’s potential success, as its improved domestic opener prediction has gone past the $32.5 million for Masters of the Universe and the $14.5 million for The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act.
BoxOffice Pro’s recent report notes that Scary Movie 6 (which is simply called “Scary Movie” to suggest that it’s a reboot) follows the trend of Gen Z movies making a comeback. This includes Scream 7 (2026), Final Destination: Bloodlines (2025), I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025), 28 Years Later (2025), and 28 Years Later: The Bond Temple (2026).
Not all of these movies succeeded at the box office, and since Scary Movie 6 is more a horror-comedy film, it’s hard to compare it to the other movies in that list. So the site believes the best comparison for the reboot might be to Jackass Forever, a 2022 comedy that brought back the Jackass franchise with its deliberately campy jokes and is also distributed by Paramount Pictures.
The marketing campaign for Scary Movie 6 has been a hit with fans so far, particularly with its bong-inspired popcorn bucket. Many thought that the glass collectible had to be a joke, but director Michael Tiddes confirmed that it was real.
