Christopher Nolan has debunked one of the biggest rumors regarding the budget for The Odyssey. The film marks one of Nolan’s biggest endeavors on the big screen, retelling Homer’s Greek epic.
What The Odyssey budget rumor has been debunked?
Before its release, many reports claimed that The Odyssey was Nolan’s most expensive film. In an interview with The Telegraph, Nolan clarified that The Dark Knight Rises remains his most expensive film, not The Odyssey. However, the film still cost a staggering amount, with reports of its budget being around $250 million. In the same interview, Nolan also debunked a wild pre-Odyssey rumor.
The Odyssey will be officially rated R, similar to Nolan’s previous film, Oppenheimer, which became the third highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. While traditionally it would slow down the film’s box office prospects, Nolan’s track record, along with shifting audience habits as seen with Deadpool & Wolverine, suggests The Odyssey will do better than traditional wisdom suggests. The Odyssey’s early box office tracking puts it ahead of Oppenheimer’s opening, which went on to gross over $975 million.

Beyond its large budget, Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy also inspired The Odyssey in other ways. Early reactions for the film have hailed it as an “absolute triumph,” with the film’s credits marking a surprising first for Nolan’s career.
The upcoming Nolan’s film stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, Corey Hawkins, Josh Stewart, Jimmy Gonzales, Maurice Compte, and more. The film is written and directed by Nolan. He also produced the film with Emma Thomas for Syncopy. Thomas Hayslip serves as the executive producer.
The Odyssey releases in theaters on July 17, 2026.
