One of Sylvester Stallone‘s most beloved movies is receiving the TV treatment. James Mangold, the director of Logan, Ford v Ferrari, and A Complete Unknown, helmed the 1997 crime-drama movie Cop Land. He is now developing a small-screen adaptation of the movie at Paramount Television Studios and Miramax Television.

Mangold will co-write, direct, and executive produce the television remake of Cop Land, according to a report from Deadline. Robert Levine, the co-creator of Jeff Bridges-led FX action-thriller series The Old Man, is also co-writing and executive-producing Cop Land. It is Mangold’s first venture into the world of TV drama as a writer. His last television project was the period-drama series Damnation, on which he served as an executive producer.
The aforementioned outlet cited sources to report that a Cop Land series has drawn considerable interest in the marketplace, receiving four offers from potential buyers. Deadline further reports that the project materialized as part of the overall deal that the acclaimed filmmaker inked with Paramount Pictures back in September.
Cop Land was Mangold’s second feature film as a director after the 1995 indie film Heavy. He also penned the script. Cop Land revolves around Sylvester Stallone’s Freddy Heflin, a New Jersey sheriff, who faces off against corrupt New York City police officers residing in his small town.
The movie has a stellar supporting cast, including Robert De Niro as Lieutenant Moe Tilden, Ray Liotta as Officer Gary “Figgsy” Figgis, Harvey Keitel as Lieutenant Ray Donlan, Robert Patrick as Officer Jack Rucker, Annabella Sciorra as Liz Randone, Edie Falco as Berta, and Janeane Garofalo as Deputy Sheriff Cindy Betts. Following its release, the movie made $63.7 million at the box office (via The Numbers). It currently has a 75% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
At the time of this article’s composition, it remains unclear whether Stallone, De Niro, and other cast members will be part of the adaptation in any manner.
