The beloved animated film Kung Fu Panda 2, featuring the voice of Angelina Jolie, has made its way into the Top 10 on streaming charts 15 years after its initial release. It is joined by two other entries from the Kung Fu Panda franchise, which is now dominating the streaming scene in the United States.
Kung Fu Panda 2 tops Peacock movie charts
Kung Fu Panda 2 is currently sitting comfortably at #2 on Peacock’s Top 10 films in the United States, according to Flix Patrol’s April 22 data. The original Kung Fu Panda ranks #4, while Kung Fu Panda 3 is at #5. Notably, the second installment has been circulating in the top 3 for a few days. It recently peaked at #1 on April 21.
The franchise centers around Po, a clumsy panda who dreams of becoming a kung fu master. In the first film, Po’s life takes an unexpected turn when Grand Master Oogway chooses him to become the legendary Dragon Warrior, destined to protect the Valley of Peace. With the help of Master Shifu, Po learns kung fu and defeats Tai Lung, who had escaped captivity.
In Kung Fu Panda 2, Po, now a Dragon Warrior, and the Furious Five protect China from Lord Shen, a peacock villain with a powerful weapon that can destroy kung fu. It also delves into Po’s origins and explains how he ended up in the Valley of Peace. In the third installment, Po reunites with his father. Meanwhile, he faces General Kai, who is trying to steal Chi from all the kung fu masters.
Across the three films, the voice cast includes Angelina Jolie as Tigress, Jack Black as Po, Dustin Hoffman as Master Shifu, Randall Duk Kim as Oogway, Jackie Chan as Monkey, Ian McShane as Tai Lung, Gary Oldman as Lord Shen, and J. K. Simmons as General Kai, among others.
Despite the animated features being geared toward kids, they also explore some mature emotional themes. Interestingly, the original idea was to make a parody. But because of his genuine love for martial arts, the original film’s co-director John Stevenson ultimately chose to make a character-centric film with emotion at its core.
Kung Fu Panda arrived in theaters on June 6, 2008. Its sequels followed on May 26, 2011, and January 29, 2016, respectively. Together, the three Kung Fu Panda films have made over $1.8 billion at the global box office.
Critically, all three DreamWorks Animation films have received high ratings on review aggregator sites. Kung Fu Panda has a rating of 87% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, Kung Fu Panda 2 has 82%, and Kung Fu Panda 3 has 87%.
