James Gunn has shared some new insights about the Clayface movie’s place on the DCU’s timeline.
DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Clayface arrives in United States theaters later this year. Co-written by Mike Flanagan and directed by James Watkins, the film will see Tom Rhys Harries play the titular Batman villain.
What did James Gunn say about Clayface?
Following the release of the first Clayface teaser trailer, Gunn — who produces the movie alongside Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, and Peter Safran — was asked when the film takes place in regards to other DCU projects.
Gunn confirmed on Threads that this is set before all other DCU shows and movies thus far, including Superman. “It’s the first DCU film out of chronological order,” he commented.
When asked about how connected the movie will be to the other stories that are happening in the DCU, Gunn said, “It’s very connected, but as always the standalone story is what’s most important.”
The official synopsis for Clayface reads, “DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, Clayface is a riveting horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain. Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.”
In addition to Rhys Harries, the cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan. Hossein Amini also worked on the screenplay, which is based on a story by Flanagan.
Clayface will be released on October 23, 2026. Before that, the next DCU project will be Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock as the titular character. That movie arrives in less than two months, now. The HBO Lanterns show is also expected to premiere this August.
