The reviews for Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 are finally out, with many critics suggesting that the animated show captures the vibe of the original. Produced by the Duffer Brothers, Season 1 of the animated show dropped on Netflix on April 23, with Eric Robles as the showrunner.
What critics are saying about Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 spin-off
The Stranger Things animated spin-off is finally here, and critics are also sharing their reviews. Taking place in the winter of 1985 in Hawkins, the show follows the adventures of the original kids from the main series. However, they have another member of the squad, Nikki, who is described as a “tough, mohawk-wearing gal.” In the animated show, the squad faces off against new monsters and a new threat.
Here are some of the reviews for Stranger Things: Tales from ’85:
Jonathan Wilson of Ready Steady Cut wrote, “Tales from ’85 attempts to recapture that more innocent, low-key spirit; it’s nostalgic for a show that was already about nostalgia.”
Meanwhile, Tara Bennett of IGN stated, “Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 is a colorful but underbaked addition to the Stranger Things universe. While animation allows for lots of creature chases and battles, the thin story results in a weaker and more repetitive adventure than expected.”
Brian Vanhooker of Polygon conveyed that the spin off “does a nice job capturing the personalities of those six kids, particularly the youthful energy they had in the early seasons.” He added, “Thanks to clever writing and great voice acting, the animated series manages to recapture some of that early Stranger Things charm.
Furthermore, Robert Lloyd of the LA Times wrote, “It’s a streamlined, supercharged telling, stripped of the soap operatics that occupied more of the original series than you might remember. It’s a classic kids-versus-monster adventure from which adults are largely absent.”
Alison Herman of Variety, however, had a different view. She stated, “The plot of ‘Tales from ‘85’ is redundant, because it’s the same plot as any other season of ‘Stranger Things’. Tales ‘from ‘85 caters to nostalgia for nostalgia, a recursive loop with a predictably diminished impact.”
All 10 episodes of Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 Season 1 are available for streaming on Netflix.
