An acclaimed Western movie starring Matt Damon and Josh Brolin in the lead roles is leaving Peacock soon. Accordingly, subscribers only have a limited time to stream the film on the platform. Following its release, it drew widespread praise for its impressive quality and also found significant commercial success.
True Grit is leaving Peacock this month
True Grit, featuring Matt Damon and Josh Brolin, will reportedly be delisted from Peacock on July 1, 2026, which is 12 days from now.
This is the second movie that adapted Charles Portis’ 1968 novel of the same name, following Henry Hathaway’s 1969 feature starring Western film icon John Wayne. Set against the backdrop of the Old West or American frontier, the story follows Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old farm girl.
After outlaw Tom Chaney murders her father, she hires lawman Rooster Cogburn, known for his boozy and trigger-happy ways, to help apprehend him and deliver justice. Meanwhile, Texas Ranger LaBoeuf also goes after Chaney for murdering a state senator, inevitably crossing paths with Ross and Cogburn, with whom he shares a tense dynamic.
Filmed primarily in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Paramount Pictures released it on December 22, 2010. Made on a roughly $38 million budget, True Grit enjoyed a robust run at the box office, raking in approximately $252 million globally (via Box Office Mojo).
It also enjoyed a positive critical reception. Critics highlighted the performances, direction, score, writing, and production value, among other elements. Some even found it better than the initial film adaptation headlined by Wayne.
On Rotten Tomatoes, True Grit boasts an impressive “certified fresh” critical approval rating of 95%. It has a lower but healthy 85% audience score. Meanwhile, Metacritic has assigned it “generally favorable” Meta and user scores of 80 and 7.8, respectively.
Acclaimed filmmaking duo Ethan and Joel Coen wrote and directed the film. They also co-produced with Scott Rudin and edited under the pseudonym Roderick Jaynes.
In addition to Damon and Brolin, the film stars Hailee Steinfeld in her theatrical movie debut, as well as Jeff Bridges. Also appearing in supporting roles are Barry Pepper, Dakin Matthews, Paul Rae, Domhnall Gleeson, and Elizabeth Marvel.
