Colin Farrell has spoken up about how the Apple TV show Sugar’s big season 1 twist “split the audience.” The mystery drama series is currently airing its second season on the streamer.
Colin Farrell talks about fan reaction to that Sugar twist before Season 2 release
In the sixth episode of Sugar, it is revealed that John Sugar is not human but part of an alien species. Speaking with Jake’s Takes, Farrell said that he’s aware of the big twist being divisive among fans.
The actor said, “But I know that it split the audience to a certain degree, which you know, when you take when you take a swing as as wide as that one, it’s going to split the audience to a certain degree usually. And I know it did, but yeah, that was originally in the first episode and and we decided to delay it [because] the show should be able to stand on its own without the trickery of an alien convention, you know.”
The twist has allowed Season 2 to incorporate more humor while deepening the show’s mystery. Fans are eagerly awaiting answers about Sugar’s species.
The new season’s synopsis reads, “Season two ushers in the return of Los Angeles’ iconic private detective and film connoisseur John Sugar, played by Farrell, who takes on a new missing persons case — searching for the older brother of an up-and-coming local boxer — all while continuing the search for his beloved missing sister. As the investigation expands into a citywide conspiracy with sinister intentions, Sugar must reckon with himself to answer the question — how far will he go to do what’s right?”
The second season has added Jin Ha, Raymond Lee, Tony Dalton, Laura Donnelly, Sasha Calle, and Shea Whigham as guest stars. The series was created by Mark Protosevich. Sam Catlin serves as the showrunner for Season 2. Farrell and Catlin also serve as executive producers alongside Audrey Chon, Simon Kinberg, Scott Greenberg, and Chip Vucelich.
Sugar is currently in the middle of streaming its Season 2 on Apple TV.
