ABC has partnered with CSI veterans to adapt a bestselling crime-thriller book series into a TV show. It will be based on Andrew Mayne‘s popular novels.

Andrew Mayne’s The Naturalist book series is being adapted into a TV series by ABC, according to Variety. The adaptation is now in active development.
The upcoming series has been described as a procedural that focuses on a “brilliant but socially estranged biologist who uses the laws of animal behavior to hunt human predators.” A key element of the story is that the protagonist harbors mysteries of his own, and he turns every case into a study of himself.
Andrew Karlsruher, who has worked previously on MacGyver and CSI: Cyber, will write The Naturalist alongside Danny Cannon, who directed the original CSI pilot. He has also executive-produced and directed pilots for shows including Nikita, Gotham, and Pennyworth.
Cannon is also an executive producer on ABC’s upcoming TV show alongside Peter Jaysen and Alan Gasmer. Andy Cutler is serving as the producer.

The Naturalist book series kicked off in 2017 with the first part. Its sequels include 2018’s Looking Glass, 2019’s Murder Theory, and Dark Pattern, which was also published in 2019. The series has been an Amazon Charts bestseller. The first novel in the franchise was even nominated for an International Thriller Writers Award in the best original paperback novel category in 2019.
Besides The Naturalist, author Andrew Mayne has written other books as well, such as The Girl Beneath the Sea and Angel Killer. His next book, The Session, will be published in October 2026.
The Naturalist has yet to receive an official release date window. The upcoming series comes from Veritas Entertainment, a media and entertainment company that was founded by Jaysen and Gasmer.
