Zack Snyder recently explained some ideas from his original approach to Aquaman in the DCEU, revealing new details about the development of the character’s backstory and design. Speaking on social media, Snyder explained the thinking behind Aquaman’s tattoos. He highlighted how they were related to a specific story idea and the character’s emotional journey.

Zack Snyder explains idea behind Aquaman’s tattoos

Zack Snyder recently explained development ideas surrounding Aquaman’s tattoos in the DCEU. He explained that the tattoos were developed as a part of the character’s backstory rather than being there just for visual appeal. In a comment on a video on Instagram, Snyder explained that the concept was developed with Jason Momoa before filming. He noted, “Right, so this concept was developed by me and Jason Momoa before the films were made, to honor his Pacific Islander roots.”

The director connected the tattoos to a key turning point in Arthur Curry’s journey, explaining that they were developed as being related to the death of his father. Snyder explained, “When Arthur’s father is killed by Black Manta’s father at the end of the first act, Arthur takes his ashes back to his people in the Pacific islands for a ritual cremation. At that moment, the character undergoes a transformation, with Snyder adding, “During that grieving ceremony, he receives the tattoos to honor his father’s memory.”

The director also expanded the role played by Vulko in the process. He said, “Vulko, tasked by his mother to watch over him, provides the Samoan tattoo artist with a special Atlantean needle that can pierce Arthur’s dense skin.” Snyder further explained the deeper meaning behind the tattoos, stating, “The tattoos become a permanent inscription of that loss and identity, bridging his Pacific Islander heritage with his Atlantean lineage — and this loss also creates the blood feud between Arthur and Black Manta that drives the larger conflict.”
