Tom Hiddleston nearly worked on Daredevil: Born Again, but not in the way you would expect.
Charlie Cox, who stars as Matt Murdock in the MCU, recently sat down with Josh Horowitz of the Happy Sad Confused podcast to talk all things Daredevil: Born Again. During their conversation, Cox revealed a shocking revelation: Hiddleston almost directed an episode of Daredevil: Born Again.
“The first season of Born Again, before the strike, was going to be 18 episodes. Tom was going to direct one of the episodes,” Cox said. “One of the great losses on the back half of that original season. Even though the changes that were made to that show were needed, necessary, and made it much better, but he was going to direct episode 12 or something.”
As Cox mentioned, Daredevil: Born Again underwent a creative reset. Instead of an 18-episode season, the show’s first season consisted of nine episodes. The eight-episode second season just finished its run on Disney+, and a third season should arrive in 2027.
Why Tom Hiddleston not directing Daredevil: Born Again is a missed opportunity
As Cox mentioned, Daredevil: Born Again underwent a creative reset. Instead of an 18-episode season, the show’s first season consisted of nine episodes. The eight-episode second season just finished its run on Disney+, and a third season should arrive in 2027.
While the creative changes were positively received, not having Hiddleston direct an episode feels like a missed opportunity for Marvel. Hiddleston has been playing Loki since 2011’s Thor. By now, Hiddleston knows what works and what doesn’t in Marvel projects, especially on television, having starred in what is arguably the MCU’s best show, Loki. Daredevil: Born Again could have benefited from having an MCU veteran like Hiddleston behind the camera.
Hiddleston is set to reprise his role as Loki in Avengers: Doomsday. It’s unclear how much longer Hiddleston will appear as the Asgardian God of Mischief in the MCU. Having Hiddleston transition to working behind the camera allows Marvel to keep one of its most important stars even after his time as Loki ends.
Perhaps Marvel will find another project for Hiddleston to direct in the future after the news of the Daredevil: Born Again opportunity.
