The Insidious franchise is known for its scary antagonists, and that’s a tradition the next installment aims to break. The villain of the upcoming Insidious: Out of the Further is bringing something no other villain has brought in the past: humor.
How will Insidious 6 be different than the other Insidious movies?
In a recent interview with EW, Lin Shaye, an Insidious mainstay, said that the villain of Insidious 6, aka Insidious: Out of the Further, will break franchise tradition by being “funny.” She also compares Sam Spruell’s performance as the demon Cyrus to Shakespeare. This is different from the past movies as all the villains have gone the straight-up scary route – notably The Lipstick-Face Demon and the Bride in Black.
Insidious: Out of the Further will follow a young single mother with the ability to bring the residents of the purgatorial dimension into the real world. This supernatural power draws the attention of the demon Cyrus, played by A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Sam Spruell.
Cyrus stands out from other villains because “he’s funny,” which makes him appear “very disarming,” said Shaye.
“There’s this enfolding and this bigness. I did say to [Spruell] it feels like Shakespeare. It feels very otherworldly, bigger than life, but very rooted in reality. I think that’s a perfect combination for an antagonist who is gonna be really awful.”
The new development seems to be a welcome change to the franchise, adding to the existing lore in interesting ways.
Insidious: Out of the Further is directed by Jacob Chase, known for 2020’s Come Play, who co-wrote the screenplay with David Leslie Johnson. It is being produced by Jason Blum, Oren Peli, James Wan, and Leigh Whannell. The upcoming Insidious film will be released on August 21, 2026.
