In the midst of a surprise appearance at SDCC 2026, animation legend Genndy Tartakovsky refuted the accusations of “wokeness” against his upcoming Conan the Barbarian show. Beyond countering his critics, Tartakovsky also proved his bona fides to adapt the fantasy icon in an adult animated series.
The new show, Conan the Barbarian: Queen of the Black Coast, was first announced in June 2026. As the title suggests, the main inspiration is the short story “Queen of the Black Coast” by Robert E. Howard. The series will be produced for Prime Video, with animation by Cartoon Network Studios and Tartakovsky serving as showrunner.
The new Conan the Barbarian cartoon immediately faced accusations it would be woke. Chief among the complaints was a poster depicting Conan wearing gold hoop earrings. Bile was also spilled regarding Tartakovsky’s comments that the show would center around Conan’s romance with Bêlit, the titular Pirate Queen of the Black Coast. Moreover, complaints took issue with a manly man such as Conan serving as second under a woman’s command.
These comments did little beyond revealing the ignorance of critics. Historically, male pirates wore gold hoop earrings as a mark of status. Conan was often depicted with such earrings, as he was a pirate in the Howard canon beyond “Queen of the Black Coast.” That canon goes back over 90 year.
How Tartakosky tackled complaints about his Conan the Barbarian
Despite their absurdity, Genndy Tartakovsky addressed the complaints in a surprise appearance at the “Conan the Barbarian: Beyond the Comics” panel at SDCC 2026. In a prerecorded video, Tartakovsky introduced himself and said he had something he wanted to read the audience. He then read a famous scene from “Queen of the Black Coast,” in which Bêlit offers herself to Conan, dancing erotically on a blood-soaked ship deck.
“Her white feet spurned the blood-stained deck and dying men forgot death as they gazed frozen at her. Then, as the white stars glimmered through the blue velvet dusk, making her whirling body a blur of ivory fire, with a wild cry she threw herself at Conan’s feet, and the blind flood of the Cimmerian’s desire swept all else away as he crushed her panting form against the black plates of his corseleted breast.”
Tartakovsky concluded the reading by revealing the source of the text. He then asked the audience “how can you not want to make this?” Reportedly, the answer of the Conan the Barbarian fans in attendance was uniformly positive.
An adult animated series can finally do Conan the Barbarian justice
Beyond rebutting his critics, Tartakovsky’s performance established two important points. First, that the Queen of the Black Coast animated series will not be appropriate for children. Second, that he intends to honor the character as written by Robert E. Howard.
This last point is not surprising, given Tartakovsky has been trying to develop a Conan the Barbarian property with Heroic Singatures since 2007. Indeed, his series Primal was conceived as a tribute to Howard. Unfortunately, Tartakovsky’s ideas for a Conan movie fell as no studio wanted to produce a feature-length animated movie for adults.
Additionally, the few studios interested in adapting Conan wanted to reduce the sex and violence content of the source material. This was before Game of Thrones proved there was an audience for such things. Or that fantasy streaming series could be profitable. Thus an animated Conan show today would be cheaper to produce and be better able to adapt Howard’s legacy, story by story.
It remains to be seen if this new Conan the Barbarian animated series will be successful. However, it seems clear Tartakovsky wishes to be faithful to Howard’s vision. He is also committed to delivering an adult show that is decidedly not for children — to say nothing of those audiences threatened by a bit of barbaric romance along with their sword and sorcery.
