The status of Mindhunter Season 3 has been up in the air for some time now. A new update suggests that the lack of a third season might have been related to director David Fincher.

During a recent Netflix panel hosted by The Indian Express, co-CEO Ted Sarandos was asked about a sequel show he wishes he would’ve gotten to make. Sarandos was quick to bring up Mindhunter, the hit crime thriller series based on the 1995 true-crime book by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker.

Sarandos’ comments seemed to suggest that it was actually Fincher who was behind the show not coming back.

“It’s not a part two, it’s a part three that I wish we would’ve got to,” said Sarandos (via World of Reel). “Mindhunter, David Fincher’s series on Netflix that… we always anticipated there would be a third season, and he got very busy making a film, and David is an unbelievably meticulous creator, so he couldn’t just do two things at the same time, and he certainly didn’t want to shortchange either one. So it got pushed off and pushed off and, I would’ve loved to have seen a third season of Mindhunter.”\

What did David Fincher previously say about Mindhunter Season 3?

Sarandos’ comments come as a bit of a surprise, as Fincher had long maintained that it was actually Netflix who was behind the show never coming back.

In 2023, Fincher spoke with French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche, and said that the show had become “too expensive” for Netflix to keep making, and that the show wasn’t generating enough new viewers for the streamer to justify returning for a third season.

Now, the case settles into a sort of he said/he said situation. It’s unclear exactly which party is right, but fans are just hoping that one day they can come together on a third season.

Debuting in 2017, Mindhunter ran for two seasons, and followed the founding of the Behavioral Science Unit in the FBI in the 1970s, and the beginning of criminal profiling as a profession.
