Netflix has finally tapped the filmmaker who will be directing Millie Bobby Brown‘s upcoming World War II movie, Nineteen Steps. It will be based on the Stranger Things alum and Kathleen McGurl’s bestselling 2023 novel of the same name.
What’s the new update for Millie Bobby Brown’s Nineteen Steps movie?
According to Deadline, Academy Award-winning director Tom Hooper has signed on to helm Netflix’s upcoming Nineteen Steps movie, with The Electric State star in talks for the leading role. Hooper is best known for his acclaimed work on 2010’s The King’s Speech, 2012’s Les Misérables, and 2015’s The Danish Girl. Bohemian Rhapsody scribe Anthony McCarten will be writing the screenplay. The hit novel was inspired by the experiences of Brown’s grandmother.
“The story follows Nellie Morris, an 18-year-old girl living in the East London neighborhood of Bethnal Green,” reads the novel’s description. “Over the course of the book, Nellie navigates the challenges of wartime life, including the threat of bombings, rationing, and the emotional turmoil of being separated from loved ones, while charting a new romance with American airman Ray. At the historical core of the novel is the Bethnal Green Tube disaster, one of the worst civilian disasters in the UK during the war, where 173 people were killed in a crush as they sought shelter during an air raid.”
Brown is also serving as a producer alongside her husband, Jake Bongiovi. It is produced by Bobby Brown for PCMA and Jonathan Eirich for Rideback, with Nick Reynolds serving as an executive producer for Rideback. Following the series finale of Stranger Things last December, Millie Bobby Brown is currently set to star in two more Netflix movies besides Nineteen Steps, including Enola Holmes 3 and Justice Picture.
