Insomniac’s most recent offering, Marvel’s Wolverine, faced a lukewarm reception upon its release. However, that did not stop the game from setting a PlayStation 5 sales record.
Aliena Analytics estimated that Marvel’s Wolverine has sold about 1.9 million copies, putting it well ahead of some of the biggest PlayStation 5 titles of the year.
Wolverine’s strong sales put its performance ahead of PlayStation Studios’ other major 2026 releases
Of the 1.9 million copies Wolverine has sold, 1 million were pre-launch digital sales. It is estimated that 22.7% of the copies sold were physical disks. The reported revenue for the game is $130 million. However, reports have also cautioned that these numbers may include unsold retail copies, which are often included in such sales reports.
The number puts the game head and shoulders above the entire lifetime sales record of Death Stranding 2. Even games like Marvel Tōkon, Saros, Marathon, and MLB The Show seem to already be lagging behind Marvel’s Wolverine, which released on September 15, 2026.
The biggest name that Wolverine has beaten out is MLB The Show, which sold 1.5 million copies on the PlayStation 5, bringing in a $99 million payday.
However, analysts have pointed out that there is only so much that ‘hype’ could carry the game. A mixed critical reception will impact sales going forward. Insomniac’s Spider-Man offerings were backed by brilliant reviews, but that is not the case for Wolverine.
Some reviews looked at the many similarities the game shares with its Spider-Man counterparts and how those dampened an otherwise fresh concept. However, the game was not without its positive reviews. Analysts are right to point out that Wolverine’s revenue is likely going to slow down considerably, but there’s no way it’s going to stop anytime soon, especially with the Holiday Season fast approaching.
