Javier Bardem is set to headline a new HBO original TV show that explores Miami’s growing financial world and its ruthless competition. The series shares similarities with The Wolf of Wall Street, particularly its focus on wealth, financial markets, ambition, and excess.
HBO has greenlit The Spread, with Bardem both starring and executive producing. Matthew Vaughn, known for directing Kingsman, will direct and executive produce. Ozark creator Bill Dubuque is writing the series with Sean Sansiveri, who will also executive produce alongside Bardem and Vaughn.
The series is a co-production with Fifth Season TV Studio. Brad Weston will executive produce for Makeready, alongside Ian Stratford and Michael Bloom for Topic Studios.
What is The Spread about?
The series follows a wealthy billionaire in a rapidly changing Miami filled with hedge funds, wealthy investors, nightlife, and intense competition. Played by Academy Award winner Bardem, the billionaire plans to transform Miami into a major financial center.
The show’s official logline reads, “Miami is turning paradise into power — Wall Street South — a subtropical collision of industry titans, elite hedge funds, staggering wealth, ruthless competition, sex, nightlife and fun on an industrial scale. Into this sun-soaked arena comes a visionary billionaire who collects the brilliant, the hungry and the dangerous, then turns their ambitions loose on the markets that power America. He chases something bigger: the power to shift the center of economic gravity to Miami — and decide how long the party lasts.”
HBO executive Francesca Orsi said the network had long wanted to set a scripted series in Florida. She also described the project as an exploration of Miami’s “gilded chaos.”
Beyond this HBO finance drama, Bardem recently appeared in Apple TV’s Cape Fear as Max Cady. He will next appear in theaters in Dune: Part 3 and Bunker, which are set to debut later this year.
The Javier Bardem-led show does not have an official premiere date.
