Tom Holland has found dance partners for his next major film. Margaret Qualley and Sabrina Carpenter have joined the upcoming Sony project. The actresses will star alongside Holland in the film, with both taking on roles connected to Fred Astaire’s career.
According to Deadline, Qualley and Carpenter have joined the untitled Fred Astaire biopic. Qualley will play Adele Astaire, Fred’s older sister and Broadway dance partner. Carpenter will portray Ginger Rogers, Astaire’s frequent film co-star and one of his most famous screen partners. Holland will play Fred Astaire in the film.
The film will explore Astaire’s career and his professional relationships with two important figures in his life. Adele was Fred’s first major dance partner, while Rogers became his celebrated Hollywood collaborator. Their work together produced several classic musical films.
What else do we know about Tom Holland’s Fred Astaire movie?
Paul King is directing the Fred Astaire film and co-wrote the screenplay with Steven Levenson. The project is based on Kathleen Riley’s biography The Astaires: Fred & Adele. Riley also serves as a script and story consultant on the film.
The film will focus partly on the relationship between Fred and Adele, who performed together on Broadway and in London before Fred established his solo career in Hollywood. His later partnership with Rogers became another defining chapter of his career.
Holland’s casting is particularly fitting given his own dance background. He played Billy Elliot in the West End production of Billy Elliot the Musical from 2008 to 2010. Earlier this year, Holland revealed that he returned to dance training for the Astaire project and planned to perform the film’s dance sequences himself.
Qualley has starred in films including The Substance, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness. Meanwhile, Carpenter has appeared in films such as Work It and The Hate U Give while also building a successful music career.
Amy Pascal, Rachel O’Connor, and Holland are producing the film. Harry Holland and Will South serve as executive producers, with Astaire’s family also involved in the production. Sony has not announced a release date yet.
