Brad Pitt just admitted he can’t “keep up” with Tom Cruise. The actor recently appeared in an interview with ETalk to discuss his latest project, Heart of the Beast.
During this interaction, he was asked if there was “a motivation or healthy competition” between him and Cruise to “push yourself physically this much” with regard to the Mission: Impossible actor getting back behind the wheel in the Days of Thunder sequel.
To this, Pitt candidly said, “No. Hell no. I couldn’t keep up with Tom anyway. No, I’m I leave the tough stuff to him.”
He then continued to explain, “This was really about, you know, it’s a survival story, and there’s great history since Jeremiah Johnson of, you know, amazing amazing survival stories on film, but ultimately it was the love story underneath, and where we were where we get to in the end, just so warm and so moving to me that it was worth any kind of, you know, discomfort we had to go through to tell this story.”
Brad Pitt discusses the action challenge behind Heart of the Beast
In Heart of the Beast, Pitt finds himself in the Alaskan wilderness for a physically punishing survival story.
Talking about the action sequences and physically demanding aspects of the story, the actor said, “It was a physically demanding adventure, probably the most I’ve ever taken on, and really physically and emotionally exhausting in that way, but worthy.” It was worth fighting for. Everyday, it’s kind of what we set out to do. Some days were better than others, but that’s what kept us fighting.”
Meanwhile, director David Ayer couldn’t stop heaping praise on Pitt for his unparalleled work on Heart of the Beast. “A lot of Brad’s work wasn’t acting. It was reacting to very, very tough, difficult environment.”
Ayer said during the same interview, describing how Pitt had to go through bush-plane sequences, glaciers, white water, mountainsides, and underwater work, in addition to hauling equipment and himself down mountainsides.
“He’s a caring, thoughtful actor who comes from a place of craft,” Ayer said of the Bullet Train actor.
Heart of the Beast is now playing in theaters.
