Luke Grimes has been a pivotal part of Yellowstone, where he has played Kayce Dutton since the original series premiered in 2018. He is still a part of the same universe, continuing his arc on the CBS spinoff, Marshals. The actor revealed that dedicated fans of Yellowstone are often left disappointed when they realize that Grimes is not actually a cowboy. Grimes discussed this in a recent radio appearance.
Luke Grimes details how Yellowstone fans react after learning he’s ‘not a real cowboy’
Luke Grimes, who has portrayed Kayce Dutton on Yellowstone since the time it premiered, discussed some offbeat reactions that fans have when they meet him or realize that he is not really a cowboy.
During his appearance on Toronto radio station CHUM 104.5, the Marshals star was asked about the “strangest thing” Yellowstone fans tell him (via PEOPLE). He said that it was often a mix of things, but some fans “loved that show so much that they were, on a certain level, upset that it wasn’t real.”
“Like, they were so obsessed,” he continued, “A lot of times you’ll get the, ‘You’re not a real cowboy.'” The actor added, “Well, of course I’m not, I’m an actor…That’s why I’m able to do this. If I was a real cowboy, I’d be, like, herding cattle right now. I wouldn’t be on this show.”
The actor previously shared an interesting tidbit about his son’s reaction to his cowboy getup. “My son thinks my cowboy hat is really funny,” he said to PEOPLE at the Los Angeles premiere of Marshals. “He doesn’t understand why I have that big thing on my head.”
Grimes said that his 1-year-old still loves it, and “he’s very excited when he got to come to [set].”
Marshals premiered on CBS on March 1, 2026, and is currently airing new episodes each week. Despite a mixed critical reception upon its premiere, the series has already been renewed for a second season.
