The BBC has canceled Football Focus after 52 years on air, bringing to a close a long chapter in its football coverage. The decision marks a major change to the broadcaster’s weekend lineup, with a new program set to replace the long-running show. This comes as part of a shift in changing viewing habits.
Football Focus’ 52-year stint at BBC comes to an end
After more than five decades on air, Football Focus has been canceled by the BBC at the end of the current season. The long-running football program, which has been a staple of the broadcaster’s Saturday schedule since 1974, will not return. This comes as part of a shift in how audiences consume sports content and how the network allocates its resources.
In its statement, the BBC said, “Following extensive consideration, BBC Sport has made the difficult decision to say goodbye to Football Focus at the end of this season.” They noted that audiences are increasingly engaging with football content across a range of digital platforms rather than traditional broadcast formats.
Alex Kay-Jelski, head of BBC Sport, described Football Focus as an important part of the network’s legacy. He said, “This decision was made before last week’s wider BBC savings announcement, reflecting the continued shift in how audiences engage with football and our commitment to evolving how we deliver content to reach fans wherever they are.”
The program has been presented by Alex Scott for the past five years. Reflecting on the development, Scott expressed pride in her association with the show. Expressing gratitude, she added, “I always knew that this would be my last season on the show, which the BBC were aware of also. My intention was to move quietly into the next chapter, but here we are.”
As part of its schedule changes, the BBC is expected to introduce The Football Interview, hosted by Kelly Somers, as a replacement.
