The planned crossover between Transformers and G.I. Joe has hit an unexpected setback. Most recently, director Steven Caple Jr. confirmed that the project is not the next installment in the franchise’s lineup. The update has raised fresh uncertainty around the timeline of the crossover, which had been widely anticipated.
G.I. Joe crossover isn’t the next Transformers movie
Director Steven Caple Jr. has clarified that the widely discussed Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover will not serve as the immediate next installment in the franchise. Speaking to ScreenRant, the filmmaker confirmed that while the crossover project remains in development, he is not currently attached to the next Transformers film in production.
When asked, “Are you any closer to getting back in that world? Do you have an update for us?” the director replied, “I do.” He added, “I still do have big plans for what that could be, but we’ll have to see. We’ll have to see what comes about it. I am not part of the next Transformers film, but it’s still in development and there’s still time, so you just never know. Yeah.”
Caple Jr., who helmed Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, had previously set up the possibility of a crossover through the film’s ending. The seventh installment in the live-action series acted as a soft reboot of the franchise and followed the Autobots as they faced Scourge and the larger threat of Unicron. Its closing moments hinted at the idea of a shared universe with G.I. Joe, leading to widespread speculation that the crossover would be the franchise’s next step.
However, Caple Jr.’s latest comments suggest that those plans might not be as immediate. At this stage, Paramount has not publicly outlined the future of the Transformers series. Although the crossover project has not been shelved, there is no confirmed schedule or indication of when it will enter production.
