The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is continuing to do well at the box office, but has yet to hit the $1 billion mark and begin to show signs that it will outpace its predecessor. The animated movie, released at the start of April and featuring the voice talents of stars like Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy, is the sequel to the 2023 film The Super Mario Bros Movie, which grossed $1.36 billion at the global box office.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie crosses $800 million worldwide

Thanks to another successful weekend, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has surpassed $800 million at the global box office, bringing it closer to the $1 billion mark.

Despite facing competition from movies like Project Hail Mary, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, and the recently released Michael, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie now stands at $831 million at the global box office, as per Box Office Mojo. Over its latest weekend, the movie added over $21 million to its domestic cume.

With Jaafar Jackson’s Michael biopic hitting theaters, competition has become even more fierce. The biopic has already grossed around $217 million at the global box office from its opening weekend, breaking the record for the highest collection of an opening weekend for a biopic. However, it lagged behind the year’s highest debut of $375 million, set by The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary, which was released on March 20, has also surpassed the $600 million mark at the global box office.

Since the massive success of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, there has been speculation about another sequel. However, in March, while talking to Polygon, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto dismissed the idea of a cinematic universe. He said, “I don’t think you’ll have a situation [where] all Nintendo characters would be joining [together in one film].”
