A new Superman TV show has been announced featuring Jimmy Olsen. But it won’t be a DCU spin-off project. HBO Max has officially ordered a brand new series based on the world introduced in last year’s Superman, led by David Corenswet in the titular role.

DC Studios’ The People v. Gorilla Grodd is now confirmed for HBO Max. The eight-episode documentary series was previously rumored to be in the works since November 2025 until its official announcement earlier today.

The documentary will focus on Jimmy Olsen and other Daily Planet characters introduced in 2025’s Superman.

How Jimmy Olsen’s Daily Planet documentary will explore Metropolis

What makes The People v. Gorilla Grodd unique is that it won’t be an actual DCU spin-off TV series based on Superman. While sharing their excitement for the project, showrunners Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault revealed that the show will be an in-universe artifact made for the people of Metropolis.

It will blend DC Comics, comedy, and true crime, expanding on the world first introduced in the Superman movie. “We’re excited by the challenge of creating a series that feels less like an entry into the DCU and more like an artifact from it. A Daily Planet original documentary made for the people of Metropolis.”

They added, “We hope it’ll appeal to fans of the comics, comedy and true crime. And while we can’t speak for audiences here yet, we already know it’s a huge hit in Metropolis. They love this series.”

Skyler Gisondo will return in The People v. Gorilla Grodd to reprise his popular role of Jimmy Olsen, a photojournalist for the Daily Planet.

Following the show’s announcement, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran said, “Between Skyler’s wonderful performance and the fantastic chemistry of the Daily Planet cast, we knew coming out of Superman that this would be a fun world to explore.”

Gunn and Safran mentioned that the documentary series will “take the audience down some of the darker and funnier streets and alleyways of the DCU as Jimmy spotlights the Metropolis criminal justice system for his docuseries.”

The People v. Gorilla Grodd TV show has yet to receive an official release window. Its ensemble cast will also feature Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White. Other key cast members include Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz.
