Obsession is now playing in theaters, and there are a few things audiences might want to know about the brand new horror movie before watching it in theaters.
Obsession is written and directed by Curry Barker (Milk & Serial), who also served as the film’s editor. The ensemble cast includes Michael Johnston (Slash) as Bear, Inde Navarrette (Superman & Lois) as Nikki, Cooper Tomlinson (Milk & Serial) as Ian, Megan Lawless (The Hate U Give) as Sarah, and Andy Richter (Elf) as Carter.
“After breaking the mysterious ‘One Wish Willow’ to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price,” reads the film’s official synopsis.
What should the Obsession audiences know about the movie beforehand?
While it’s honestly best to go in with as little knowledge as possible about the movie, the biggest thing to know about Obsession before going in is that it is more of a “slow burn” horror movie. While not traditionally scary in a “jump scare” way, Obsession features a heavily foreboding atmosphere throughout most of the movie. The movie largely features the slow spiral of Bear and Nikki’s relationship, as she becomes more and more obsessed with him after his wish.

As such, the movie doesn’t feature much in the way of jump scares or creatures appearing in any way. However, Nikki (played by Inde Navarrette) does have some absolutely terrifying moments throughout the movie, including a scene midway through when the couple are sleeping that features some very unnerving acting. As a whole, the movie looks more to create a tense atmosphere that lingers throughout the whole movie, and it succeeds there in many ways.
That doesn’t mean the film isn’t without scares, though. The final act of the movie ratchets things up quite a lot, in fact. Without going into detail, there’s a handful of very chaotic scenes in the final minutes of the movie that are sure to have people talking. The last act also features a ramp up in the effects and gore department, so fans looking for that will be satisfied.
