American Psycho revival takes shape under Luca Guadagnino and a major update from Lionsgate.
What is the new American Psycho update for Luca Guadagnino’s reimagining?
Lionsgate President of International Helen Lee-Kim has confirmed that a reimagining of American Psycho, based on Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel, is in the works. “We’ll hopefully have a script for that later in the year,” she told Deadline.
Christian Bale immortalized Patrick Bateman in Mary Harron’s American Psycho in 2000. Jared Leto, Willem Dafoe, Reese Witherspoon, Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, and Chloe Sevigny also played crucial roles in this film. The story follows Bateman as a wealthy young businessman who appears normal from the outside, but secretly lives as a psychopathic serial killer targeting innocent people.
For fans, it’ll be intriguing to see who takes up the lead role in Guadagnino’s reimagining. When asked to comment on a possible candidate’s name for the new movie, Bale said, “Whoever wants to give it a shot, give it a pop.”

“I loved making it with [director] Mary Harron so many years back, fantastic memories of it all. Bold choice of anyone to try to do a — I don’t know if they’re doing a remake or what, I don’t know anything else about it. But all the best to ’em, I like brave people.” Rumor has it that several actors have turned down the role.
Scott Z. Burns will write the screenplay for the reimagining. As for the cast, Lionsgate is yet to make an official announcement. As for the director, Guadagnino is known for movies like Call Me by Your Name, Challengers, and After the Hunt, among others.
The reimagining of American Psycho is yet to receive a release date window.
