Over a year after revealing its first trailer, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros has a new update that will excite fans. The real-time strategy game set in George R.R. Martin’s fantasy universe comes from PlaySide Studios. The title was first announced at Summer Game Fest in 2025.
What is the update on the Game of Thrones video game?
Developer PlaySide Studios has announced an early 2027 release date window for GoT: War for Westeros. The news was accompanied by a new development update post that detailed the new features coming to it. The new additions include several factions and houses, updates to combat units, and a reveal of a new map, Ashemark.
Like its source material, War for Westeros will let players lead either House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or even the Night King’s Army of the Dead. Each House will include iconic characters with unique abilities, such as Jon Snow and Tywin Lannister. Each House will include a “trump card”, like a Giant blowing away soldiers around it when it stomps its club into the ground.
As for combat units, players will be able to command full squads instead of individual soldiers. PlaySide is emphasizing realistic elements such as the physical weight of the cavalry, physical impact, unit behavior, and responsiveness. Players will need to learn the battlefield and deploy units with specific anti-cavalry roles to break the momentum of a charging enemy group.
These battles will take place across iconic locations from the series, including King’s Landing, the Wall, and the new map, Ashemark, situated in the Westerlands. Ashemark is one of the locations “caught in Robb Stark’s campaign” during the War of the Five Kings. It is being designed as a 1v1 battlefield, in contrast to the other maps.
PlaySide also stated that it will share more updates about the game’s progress with players “over the coming weeks.” This will be followed by some “exciting reveals” later this year. With an early 2027 release window, it’s possible the game will appear at this year’s Game Awards, which takes place in December.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is in development for PC.
