Police said a silver Honda CRV wagon was deliberately crashed into a house in Dandenong North about 10.15am today.

A woman inside was allegedly attacked with a knife, suffering serious injuries.

A large knife was dumped on the nature strip next to a car with blood smeared on the side.

The alleged offender's distressed mother, who witnessed the attack, was consoled by neighbours.

His injured sister aged in her 30s taken to Dandenong hospital.

Police allege the man's crime spree started 50 kilometres away in Epping, where he stabbed his male cousin, 40, in a share house about 7.30am.

They said following the incident in Dandenong North a few hours later he took off on foot, prompting a widespread search.

"We don't know if the offender is armed in any way but we are treating that person as potentially armed and exercising caution," Inspector Graham Higginbotham said.

"We've got other resources, the dog squad, the air wing out looking for this male."

The man was described as African in appearance and was dressed in a brown shirt and black pants.
