A24‘s Backrooms is now playing in theaters, and with the new horror movie out, many are wondering just how scary and gory it is. We’re here to prepare you for the horrific descent into the backrooms.
Is Backrooms scary?
For those unfamiliar with the concept of the Backrooms, the question of whether or not it’s scary hinges mostly on if you find liminal spaces creepy. The movie, which is based on director Kane Parsons’ own horror series based on an infamous image that first began circulating on 4chan, is about Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character finding the mysterious “Backrooms” inside of a wall in his furniture store. Things take a turn, though, as he begins finding entities inside of the maze-like rooms.
The Backrooms as a concept might not make people feel uneasy. However, Parsons’ movie does a great job creating a tense and scary environment. The movie, much like his horror series, utilizes a lot of found footage POV which showcases characters moving through the eerie rooms in mostly silence. The opening, specifically, highlights one of the more unnerving moments of the movie, as a researcher can be heard slowly making his way through the Backrooms before running into a terrifying figure.
The movie does also employ a handful of well-timed jump scares, but relies much more on tone than anything else. Ultimately, the concept of the Backrooms is one that will either scare you or not from the get-go. If you find the concept of liminal spaces and “clipped in” objects a bit unnerving, then the bizarre and uncanny imagery will likely disturb. If not, the way Parsons presents most of it is still unnerving throughout, but not inherently terrifying.
How much gore is in Backrooms?
For those worried about lots of gore in Backrooms, there isn’t much to worry about. The movie is pretty much gore-free, and features no real disgusting scenes in it. There is one single scene toward the end of the movie that might fit the bill of “gory,” but even it is mostly subdued. The film’s final few minutes does feature some extended blood spray and chaos, but nothing that would constitute it being described as gory.
Backrooms is directed by Kane Parsons, from a script written by Will Soodik. The cast of the movie is led by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, and also stars Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lucite Maxwell, and Avan Jogia. The script comes from Will Soodik and Roberto Patino, while James Wan and Michael Clear are producing for Wan’s Atomic Monster.
