Moonrise Kingdom leaves Netflix in May
Moonrise Kingdom is exiting Netflix on May 1, 2026, according to a report by What’s on Netflix. Some of the other movies leaving the platform that day are Hell or High Water, three Jaws movies, two How to Train Your Dragon films, and 1984’s Dune.
As mentioned above, Moonrise Kingdom is one of the biggest box-office successes of Anderson’s career. Made on a $16 million budget, the movie made over $68 million at the worldwide box office. Globally, it’s the third-highest-grossing Wes Anderson movie after The Grand Budapest Hotel, which earned over $174 million, and The Royal Tenenbaums, which earned over $71 million.
Following its release, Moonrise Kingdom also drew positive reviews and currently has a 93% approval rating from critics on the review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes. “Kingdom benefits as well from a better designed story that does not weave restlessly the way his [Anderson] last did, but it’s still not going to convince anyone who doesn’t already like what Anderson does to follow along,” Joshua Starnes of ComingSoon wrote. “For those who are willing, or are willing to give Anderson another try, it is definitely worth the effort.”
Predominantly set in the ’60s on a fictional island off the New England coast, the movie revolves around an orphan boy who leaves a scouting camp to reunite with a girl he likes. Bruce Willis portrays Captain Duffy Sharp, and Edward Norton stars as Scout Master Randy Ward. The film’s cast also includes Jared Gilman as Sam Shakusky, Kara Hayward as Suzy Bishop, Bill Murray as Walt Bishop, Frances McDormand as Laura Bishop, Tilda Swinton as Social Services, and Jason Schwartzman as Cousin Ben.
